Life Inside the Wienermobile Vehicle

Stories from the road

A Wienermobile from the Past…

Although everyone can see the 1952 Wienermobile on display in the Henry Ford museum, not many people have pictures of the 1952 Wienermobile from back in the day.  We met a lady in Lancaster, PA who had some photos and memories to share from her hot dog meat up back in 1955.

Hot Dog King Celebrates 40 Years

A hidden hot dog gem in Virginia celebrated it’s 40th anniversary this year. The locals in Williamsburg and Newport News know this diner as the “Hot Dog King”. Yes, that is a dog gone long time for a hot dog stand to stay in business, and some families have been eating at the Hot Dog King since in opened back in 1972.

Taylor and I stopped by the Hot Dog King restaurants, and we were happy to join in the celebration and meat some of the locals!

It turns out that the last Wienermobile to visit the Hot Dog King restaurant was the 1988 model.  There were some pictures inside, but this artist’s rendering was one of my personal favorites!

Cleaning Our Buns

Just like every other dog, the Wienermobile needs a nice, long bath every so often. However, you can’t take this hot dog hot rod through your typical gas station car wash, so we Hotdoggers need to find other ways of washing it down. One of our go-to methods is a quick visit to the local fire station. Ever notice how clean a fire truck is? Yeah, they are professionals when it comes to washing jumbo-sized vehicles!

Washing the outside of the Wienermobile is one thing, but when winter rolls around, we also clean the inside after tracking in all the snow. As Hotdoggers living on the road, we rarely have to mop a kitchen floor, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a mop on hand.

At the end of the day, no one likes a dirty dog, so it’s our job as Hotdoggers to keep this big dog clean as can be. There’s one thing that has been bothering me though… Even after a thousands scrubs, we still can’t seem to get that mustard stain out of the floor!

A Visit to San Frankcisco

During our visit to San Frankcisco, Tailgatin’ Traci and I couldn’t help by stop at the famous Painted Ladies. There are buns and buns of Victorian-style houses in the city, but me a vist to some very special ones. Yep, those are the houses from Full House!

Another must-see in the city is the Golden Gate Bridge.  We were lucky enough to find a day without a lot of fog!

Beautiful Bunsets

Throughout our journey across the hot dog highways of America, Hotdoggers get to see some beautiful scenery. One of the things that I relish the most is a great sunset photo (or bunset photo, as I like to say) with the Wienermobile. Here are some of my favorites from my first 6 months of driving through the South region:

Filling up the tank in Bethany, MO and en route to Kansas City.

Photo while riding shotbun to Texas.

Taking the scenic-kraut through Oklahoma.

Fog settling in at night in Cotter, AR.

Beautiful bunset over the bay in South Padre Island, TX.

Arkansausage Adventures

I had the joy of touring Arkansausage during my first six months of driving the Wienermobile, and I managed to see a good portion of the Natural State. Here are some photos from our stops:

Stopping at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, AR.

Fishing at Lobo Landing in Heber Springs, AR.  What a catch!

Trying to single-handedly take on this giant Arkansas Razorback football player!

Schnitzel Itzel posing next to the River Market in Little Rock, AR.

Polly Want a…. Hot Dog?

Dijon know? The origin of the saying “Polly want a cracker?” dates back to 1849, and for years people have been teaching parrots this saying.  Well, what does a loyal Oscar Mayer fan teach his/her parrot? Watch a video of Sandy and her Yellow-naped Amazon parrot in Milton, FL to find out!

South Plains Career Fair

Lots of Wienermobile fans ask us what it takes to cut the mustardand become a Hotdogger.  Well, you have to be an enthusiast college graduate excited to travel the country in the Wienermobile for one year.  My c0-Hotdogger Schnitzel Itzel graduated last year from the University of Texas-Pan American (Go Broncs!), and I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Go Badgers!).  While traveling through West Texas, we stopped at the South Plains Career Fair to encourage college attendance.

We had quite the crowd of students taking their picture with LTL LINK, and some of the other professionals stopped by as well, including a group of nurses from Covenant Hospital and a group from South Plains Technical College.
