Life Inside the Wienermobile Vehicle

Stories from the road

Four wheels are almost better than six

It’s no secret that we like funny vehicles. In New Orleans, Salchicha and I hopped on a pair of Segways; in Omaha, Hamanda Cheese and I flagged down some untraditional cyclists; and of course there’s that hot dog we drive.

The newest vehicle to add to our roster: ATVs. Outside of Madison, WI, Hamanda Cheese and I snagged driver’s seat spots on a couple of four wheelers.  We rolled through the woods, gunned it up a few hills, and taught ourselves to shift gears like pros.

ATVs don’t really compare to the Wienermobile, but by the end of the day, we were definitely a pair of hotdoggers

The end of the road

What’s better than driving one of America’s favorite cars to Motown?  Driving one of America’s favorite cars to Motown during the men’s Final Four tournament.

We parked our buns next to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ wiener roast, which raised money for the non-profit. With half of Michigan turning out to sport its green and white, we didn’t snag any tickets to the game. Still, we’re two pretty lucky dogs.

One meathead relishes his ride

One recipe for a great hotdogging day: Line up for the downtown Chicago St. Patrick’s Day parade; bring along a writer who introduces himself as Meathead; smile, wave, and repeat.

Meathead – a self-professed meat aficionado and the mastermind behind amazingribs.com, a site devoted to rib history, recipes and culture – is actually Craig Goldwyn, a freelance writer and photographer for several publications, including the Huffington Post and the Chicago Tribune.

We invited him to strut down Columbus with us in the downtown Chicago St. Patrick’s Day parade – an annual fete that brings out thousands of the city’s Irish (and everyone else who wishes they were).

He didn’t hesitate to accept the invite, and he spent most of the ride grinning like a five-year-old.  We don’t blame him.  The parade-goers waved, cheered and sang the jingle – almost loudly enough to drown out nearby bagpipers. For a few minutes, we all felt like celebrities.

Their bologna has just one name

On the road, we’re constantly impressed by strangers’ generosity. The members of Full of Faith, a Tennessee-based ministry that feeds the homeless in Nashville, are no exception.

This group of six approached us at our events and told us that they spend each Saturday delivering hundreds of sandwiches to the hungry in Nashville.  Their meat of choice?  Oscar Mayer B-O-L-O-G-N-A, of course.

They were jazzed that we drive BOLOGNA, a Wienermobile named after their favorite sandwich.  We’ve gotta admit, it made us smile, too.

300 years young

Vacherie, LA – The tour guide called this sight the “most beautiful view in all of Louisiana.”  I’ve only visited a few cities in the Creole State with the Wienermobile, but I think he might be right. The trees lining the walkway of Oak Alley Plantation are about 300 years old with a life expectancy of just six centuries. Hurry! Visit before they’re gone.

How'd you like that for a front yard?

Now that's a pretty front yard.

XOXO, Bologna

Some lucky dogs at our events in the Midwest have been sending Wienermobile Valentines. Think you cut the mustard?  Watch your mailbox! Maybe a special someone sent a note.

Oh, my! It’s a Burmese Python

We see some crazy sights on the road, but a 14-foot-long Burmese Python we noticed in Junction City, KS probably tops our list.

The owner had purchased the pet a few years ago, and some neighborhood kids helped him care for the snake. We pulled OH I WISH over as soon as we spotted the python; somehow, we were brave enough to try and hold it!

The funny thing?  While we admired this massive snake, all of the neighbors snapped photos of the Wienermobile.

Salchicha Selena and I might know how to drive a hot dog, but we're not definitly not python experts. It was heavy!

Snakes are surprisingly heavy!

Two sweet rides

There aren’t many vehicles that get as many waves and smiles as the Wienermobile, but Segways come pretty close.  We cruised around the French Quarter in New Orleans on these futuristic two-wheelers for about an hour, but we still wanted to pose next to the Wienermobile.

Which would you rather drive: OH I WISH or a Segway?

Built for climbing

Lafayette, LA – a town two hours west of New Orleans – has weathered its fair share of hurricanes.  But this giant oak tree outside of St. John’s Cathedral has survived them all. Said to be around 500 years old, the tree provided us some much-needed shade when we visited Cajun country in August with the Wienermobile. It also looks really fun to climb; guess that’s why the church roped it off!

Check out that trunk!
