A Bunderful Bridge
Most days you don’t think about the importance of bridges, who built them and what they’re made of. They blend into everyday life. A few days ago we drove BOLOGNA across a bridge that was hard to ignore, the Mackinac Bridge that connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. This truly bunderful bridge, completed in 1957, is the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere. The bridge’s main span is 3,800 feet or 8,450 hot dogs, and cost $7 to cross. It takes seven years to paint the entire bridge and the bridge is repainted as soon as the previous coat is finished.
After crossing the bridge we drove BOLOGNA all the way through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We took a break and ate some pasties, a traditional UP treat that’s similar to a pot pie. It was a gorgeous drive, as you can see from the franktastic sunset!

I remember driving YUMMM, now YUMMY, across the Mackinac Bridge back in 1989. The wind kept catching YUMMM’s tail, which made for an interesting but, nevertheless, beautiful drive. Enjoy the U.P.! Thanks for the photos.
